Music

The music room is not only a busy place but a loud one too! music graphicsWe are always making noise whether it is singing, dancing, or playing instruments.

One main emphasis is the singing voice. It is an instrument that we carry with us every where we go. Each student is given instruction and opportunities to develop their singing voice.

Rhythm is taught starting in Kindergarten with identifying steady beat and long and short sounds. It continues to build on concepts each year until in fifth grade when the students compose their own rhythm patterns and incorporate rhythm into a final composition project.

music graphicMelody begins with listening for high and low sounds in Kindergarten and continues in the middle grades with reading notes on the staff. In fourth grade the students learn to play the recorder and are expected to know the notes on the staff. Fifth graders will compose their own melodies and start to learn the whole and half step patterns of the major and minor scales.

Third, Fourth and Fifth graders are welcome to join our chorus, The Lyrical Leopards. We practice on Tuesday mornings at 7:30am before school. We perform musicals and sing at Meymandi Concert Hall every spring.
